Eighteenth-century dressers evolved from simple sideboards used for serving food into multi-tiered storage units designed to display ceramic plates, pewter, and kitchen utensils in domestic homes.

These items were predominantly constructed from solid native hardwoods such as oak, elm, or pine, utilizing traditional joinery techniques including hand-cut dovetails, pegged mortise and tenon joints, and brass or iron hardware.

Authentic pieces exhibit natural timber patination, tool marks from hand planes, irregular board widths, hand-forged or period-appropriate replacement fixings, and structural wear consistent with centuries of domestic use.

Such foundational furniture functions as a practical storage solution and display focal point in contemporary rustic kitchens or dining spaces, paired with minimalist ceramics to balance the heavy timber presence.

Preservation involves maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight, dusting with a dry microfiber cloth, and periodically applying traditional beeswax to nourish and protect the timber surface.
