An 18th-century French commode is a low chest of drawers, typically featuring sophisticated wood veneers, bronze or brass mounts, and often a marble top, evolving through stylistic periods from Louis XIV to Louis XVI.

These pieces were primarily constructed from a carcase of secondary wood such as oak or pine, veneered with exotic and native hardwoods like walnut, mahogany, or kingwood, and frequently topped with marble.

Authenticity is identified through hand-cut dovetail joints, traditional hand-beaten or cast hardware, natural shrinkage cracks in the timber, and construction methods consistent with pre-industrial cabinet making.

An antique commode can ground a modern room by providing historical contrast, functioning effectively as a standalone statement piece topped with minimalist art or contemporary ceramics.

Maintain antique furniture by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber splitting, applying microcrystalline wax periodically, and avoiding silicone-based polishes.
