FAQs

Nineteenth-century British landscape painting typically focuses on natural scenery, rural life, and dramatic atmospheric effects, heavily influenced by the Romantic movement.

Artists generally used rigid supports such as wood panels or millboard, primed with a gesso ground, and applied oil-based pigments using hog bristle brushes.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the ageing of the paint layers, the type of board or canvas substrate, hand-carved framing, and the presence of period signatures or maker marks.

It is typically hung as a focal point on a panelled wall or grouped within a gallery wall arrangement alongside complementary historic artworks.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity and temperature, keeping the piece away from direct sunlight, and cleaning only with professional conservation methods.
