Copperplate engraving is an intaglio printmaking process where an image is incised into a copper sheet with a burin, allowing fine, precise lines to hold ink for transfer under high pressure to paper.

Authentic prints from this era typically utilise hand-pressed laid paper made from linen or cotton rags, featuring distinct chain and wire lines visible when held to the light.

Authentic pieces exhibit plate marks where the edges of the metal plate pressed into the paper, along with subtle dot patterns characteristic of ink sitting in recessed lines rather than sitting flat via modern digital or offset printing.

Historic engravings add intellectual depth and gravitas to a space; pair them with clean, modern mounts and simple frames to create a striking contrast against neutral or deeply pigmented walls.

To prevent fading and degradation, frame prints using acid-free materials, archival mounts, and UV-filtering glass, and hang them away from direct sunlight and excessive humidity.
