Mezzotint is a printmaking process of the intaglio family, developed in the mid-17th century, which allows for smooth gradations of tone and deep dark areas, making it particularly popular in the 18th century for reproducing oil paintings.

Authentic prints from this era are typically printed on laid paper made from linen and cotton rags, using hand-mixed oil-based printers inks pressed via copperplate printing presses.

Authentic pieces exhibit plate marks indented into the paper, visible chain and wire lines in laid paper under transmitted light, and microscopic ink distribution consistent with hand-pressed intaglio plates rather than modern dot-matrix printing.

To preserve the paper, use acid-free mounting materials and UV-protective glazing, then hang it within a traditional wooden or gilt frame to contrast effectively against contemporary minimalist or traditional walls.

Keep prints away from direct sunlight, maintain stable humidity levels between 45 and 55 percent, and avoid hanging them in damp areas such as kitchens or unventilated spaces to prevent foxing and paper degradation.
