Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE VICTORIAN ERA:
Turned balusters and shaped aprons: popular features of Queen Anne revival cabinetmaking.
Geometric line inlay in overlapping arcs: decorative stringing seen on late nineteenth-century pieces.
Burr walnut veneers across drawer fronts: matched figure cut with Victorian veneer saws.
Natural shrinkage along the crossbanded border: timber movement over more than a century.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This Victorian plate back dresser is executed in the Queen Anne revival style, fashioned from burr walnut and elm timbers in warm brown tones with oak liners and crossbanded drawer fronts. The upper section comprises a moulded cornice surmounting two open shelves, the lower shelf framed by two arched panel door cupboards, all supported by turned baluster uprights. The base incorporates three short drawers fitted with metal swing handles over concentric circle line inlay, descending to a shaped apron centred with pendant acorn finials. The structure rests on turned baluster legs united by a lower potboard base undertier, standing at 214 cm high, 155 cm wide, and 53 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this large storage and display furniture piece serves well in a traditional kitchen or dining room for tableware, plate display, and linen storage. The open shelving provides practical display space for decorative ceramics, while the enclosed cupboards and three lower drawers conceal items out of sight. The solid lower potboard shelf accommodates baskets, large serving platters, or additional kitchen accessories within easy reach.

A country dresser typically comprises a lower sideboard base containing drawers or cupboards alongside an upper open shelf unit, historically used in British homes for storing and displaying tableware.

Regional artisans crafted dressers using native hardwoods such as oak, elm, walnut, and pine, frequently utilising dovetailed joinery and decorative grain veneers such as burr walnut.

Look for hand-sawn timber marks on backboards, hand-cut dovetail joints on drawers, genuine age-related patination, and period-correct brass drawer handles or iron hinges.

Display modern ceramics, glassware, or art books on the upper open shelves while using the lower drawers and potboard base for concealed kitchen or dining room storage.

Dust regularly using a dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish annually, positioning the item away from direct heat sources to prevent timber shrinkage.
