A stick barometer is a weather-measuring instrument using a vertical column of mercury, which gained popularity during the 17th and 18th centuries in Britain for domestic forecasting.

They were typically constructed from solid hardwoods such as mahogany or oak, featuring brass scales, glass tubes containing mercury, and often intricate architectural pediments at the top.

Authentic pieces usually display period-appropriate secondary woods, hand-engraved ivory or brass scales, traditional artisanal fixings, and natural ageing characteristics in the timber and finish.

Mount it as a focal point on a narrow wall space, in a hallway, or within a study to add vertical architectural interest and historical contrast to modern decor.

Keep them away from direct sunlight and major temperature fluctuations to protect the wood finish, and consult a specialist horologist if the instrument needs relocating or restoration.
