Description

Abraham Broadbent (1868-1919), bronze figure of "Atlas", signed and dated 1914, on green marble base. In good and original condition. 510mm high and 140mm diameter. English.

Abraham Broadbent( 1868-1919), carver, modeller and stonemason, more often than not on an architectural scale, built a reputation as an outstanding sculptor in the English Baroque style. Grounded at the South London Technical Art School in Lambeth, and widely exhibited, most notably at the Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society, the Art Workers' Guild, and the Royal Academy, his work is perhaps most famously represented by the portraits of Huntington Shaw (the noted English blacksmith) and Thomas Tompion (the father of English clockmaking) that form part of the Aston Webb façade of the Victoria & Albert Museum.

In Greek mythology, Atlas was condemned to hold up celestial spheres for eternity, a motif frequently revived in European art to symbolize endurance, strength, and scholarly pursuit.

These sculptures are typically produced using the lost-wax casting technique (cire perdue), utilizing copper alloys combined with tin or zinc to achieve durable metalwork with fine surface detail.

Authenticity is determined by examining surface patination, casting seams, tool marks on the underside, signature or foundry marks, and the density and weight of the metal alloy.

Position the piece on a dark wood surface such as a mantelpiece or a study desk to provide a classical focal point that contrasts with clean modern lines.

Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth and occasionally apply microcrystalline wax to protect the patina, avoiding liquid cleaners, abrasives, or harsh chemical solvents.
