Portrait miniatures gained immense popularity in Europe during the 16th century and experienced a significant revival in 19th-century France, where artists specialised in creating highly detailed, small-scale likenesses on ivory, vellum, or card for personal keepsakes and diplomatic gifts.

Traditional portrait miniatures were typically hand-painted using watercolour or gouache on thin supports such as ivory, bone, or card, and were commonly housed in custom brass, gilt bronze, or wooden frames often backed with velvet or silk.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit delicate, precise brushwork visible under magnification, genuine period framing methods such as hand-chased brass or cast gilt bronze, and natural ageing characteristics on the backing materials and protective glazing.

These small-scale artworks can be effectively styled by incorporating them into a gallery wall, placing them on a mantelpiece alongside modern objects to create contrast, or displaying them on a dedicated bookshelf using a small display easel.

To preserve these delicate items, display them away from direct sunlight and high humidity to prevent fading of the pigments and degradation of the backing materials, and clean the exterior frame gently with a dry, soft cloth.
