Description

A wonderful antique mahogany chest of drawers. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1890’s period.

It is of outstanding quality, it is very well built and it is a useful size, with lots of storage space inside the generous drawers. There are lovely brass handles, this sits on bracket feet with a beautifully shaped lower edge.

The mahogany has a gorgeous colour tone and patina, we have just had this re-polished, the condition is great for its age. There are some small marks and indentations beneath the polish, commensurate for age.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Mahogany chests of drawers gained immense popularity during the 18th century, particularly within Georgian and Regency eras, as imported timber from the Americas and West Indies became accessible to cabinet makers.

Authentic period chests typically utilise solid mahogany or mahogany veneers applied to secondary woods like oak or pine, featuring hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer construction and traditional brass hardware.

Authenticity is identified by examining the construction joints for hand-cut dovetailing, looking for natural timber shrinkage, tool marks, patination on the wood, and examining the backboards and drawer linings for age-appropriate wear.

An antique chest of drawers adds warmth and textural contrast when placed against neutral modern walls, serving as a functional storage piece in a bedroom or a striking focal point in a contemporary hallway.

Preservation requires keeping the wood away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking, dusting with a soft dry cloth, and occasionally applying traditional beeswax to nourish the finish.
