Description

A fine oil on artist board landscape by the artist Alfred Oliver 1868-1943. The scene is beautifully depicted in great detail with a bold use of colour. The landscape is typical for Oliver and most likely his favourite North Wales in early Autumn. The work is signed to the lower left ‘A. Oliver’. Alfred Oliver was born in Nottingham but lived for many years in North Wales where he was renowned for painting the landscapes in differing weather conditions and times of day. He exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1886-1921. This work is in excellent condition and framed in a simple period frame. A very fine example of this desirable artist’s work. C.1920.

FAQs

Landscape painting focuses primarily on natural scenery such as mountains, forests, rivers, and fields, often capturing the changing effects of light, atmosphere, and weather conditions.

Traditional oil paintings are typically executed on stretched canvas, linen, or wooden panels using ground pigments suspended in drying oils such as linseed, housed within carved and gilded wooden frames.

Authentic period pieces exhibit characteristics such as natural craquelure in the paint layer, aged canvas oxidation on the reverse, traditional hand-carved wooden stretcher bars, and period-appropriate framing techniques.

Integrating traditional art into contemporary spaces creates a curated contrast; hang the piece individually on a neutral wall or layer it on a mantelpiece to add depth, texture, and historical interest.

Preservation involves maintaining stable indoor humidity and temperature, keeping the artwork out of direct sunlight, and dusting gently with a soft, dry brush while avoiding liquid cleaners or direct contact with the painted surface.
