Description

A fine oil on canvas depicting pollarded willows at twilight by the Scottish artist Alexander William Wellwood Rattray 1849-1902. The work is typical of the artist with an ethereal feel to the piece and a light wispy use of the brush. The painting is in excellent untouched condition and is signed to the lower left. Alexander William Wellwood Rattray (1849-1902) was born and educated in Glasgow at Glasgow University and the Glasgow School of Art. He was a devoted landscape painter in oils and watercolour, painting mainly in the Highlands, the East coast of Scotland and in the Mull of Kintyre. He exhibited works at the Royal Academy, the Royal Institute, the Royal Scottish Academy, the Royal Watercolour Society and every other major gallery. He was a member of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolours, the New English Art Club, and was made an associate of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1896. The painting retains the original frame which has been overpainted in places. The whole is a great example of this interesting Scottish artist’s work with a great presence and is ready to hang. C.1900.

Nineteenth-century landscape painting often focused on realism, naturalism, and the interplay of light and shadow, capturing atmospheric conditions and pastoral scenery with careful detail.

These works typically utilise artist-grade oil pigments applied to stretched linen or cotton canvas, mounted on wooden stretcher bars, and housed in heavily carved and gilded plaster-on-wood frames.

Authenticity is assessed by examining canvas ageing, craquelure patterns in the oil paint, hand-carved wooden frame construction, artist signatures, and occasionally stretcher frame stamps or labels on the reverse.

An antique painting serves as a striking focal point when hung against neutral walls, paired with minimalist contemporary furnishings to create a balanced contrast between historic depth and modern simplicity.

Preservation requires hanging the artwork away from direct sunlight and heat sources, maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, and dusting the canvas and frame gently with a soft, dry brush.
