Description

Augustin-Luc Demoussy (1809-1880)

Provenance: From a private London collection

Signed lower left hand side

Title: Aphrodite Holding a Dove

Period: Dated 1872

Overall measurements with the frame are 77cm x 66cm x 8cm and the painting measured at 58cm x 50cm

The present work is a beautifully composed oil-on-panel depiction of Aphrodite Holding a Dove by the French romantic school portrait painter Augustin-Luc Demoussey (1809-1880).

Aphrodite is the ancient Greek goddess of sexual love and beauty, identified with Venus by the Romans. In art, Aphrodite is frequently depicted with doves, the bird being a symbol of love, peace, and fidelity. It embodies the gentle and nurturing aspects of Aphrodite.

Augustin-Luc Demoussey was a French painter and lithographer, born on October 5 1809 in Paris and died in the same city in January 1880. The painter entered the Ecole des Beaux Arts in 1829 where he was a student of professors Heisent and Abel de Pujol. His debut at the Salon was in 1833 where he was awarded the medal of the 3rd degree in 1837.

Many of the artist’s works have a classical romantic theme of which the painting offered is a very fine example. Augustin-Luc Demoussey’s work is rare to the market. The present work is a very decorative 19th century painting which would suite a variety of traditional and contemporary interiors.

Condition report:

The painting is in excellent restored condition having been cleaned in recent times. There are areas of overpainting and retouching to the background, but generally well blended and even. The paint surface is clean and even. There is a very slight bend to the panel, but totally invisible from the front. It appears to have been stabilised at some stage. The 19th century French frame has been refurbished and is in good condition.

Date of Manufacture

Westcoast Fine Art has dated this Antique Oil Painting to the 19th Century.

Nineteenth-century classical painting typically draws inspiration from classical mythology and history, featuring idealised human forms, balanced compositions, and meticulous attention to anatomical detail and subtle tonal gradation.

Traditional oil paintings of this period were executed using finely ground pigments suspended in drying oils such as linseed, applied to stretched linen canvases and housed in hand-carved, gilded wooden frames.

Authenticity is assessed through examination of canvas weave, craquelure in the oil paint layer indicating age, stretcher frame construction, artist signatures or stamps, and the craftsmanship of the accompanying gesso and gilt frame.

Classical oil paintings add gravitas and depth to modern interiors when contrasted against minimalist walls or paired with mid-century furniture, creating an eclectic aesthetic that highlights the artworks rich colour palette and ornate frame.

Antique oil paintings should be kept out of direct sunlight, away from extreme humidity and temperature fluctuations, and gently dusted with a soft, dry brush by a professional conservator when necessary.
