The Meiji (18681912) and Taisho (19121926) periods marked a significant opening of Japan to Western influences, leading metalworkers to adapt traditional casting techniques for international markets while maintaining meticulous attention to anatomical detail.

These sculptures were typically produced using the traditional lost-wax casting method (cire perdue), allowing for intricate surface textures and patination. They were often mounted on heavy stone plinths such as marble.

Authenticity is generally determined by examining the depth and quality of the dark brown or black patination, the precision of the casting seams, the weight of the metal, and the presence of artist signatures or foundry marks, often incised or applied on the underside.

A bronze sculpture acts as a strong focal point and pairs well with clean-lined wooden furniture, leather accessories, and neutral backdrops. It can be placed on a desk, bookshelf, or mantelpiece to add textural contrast and historical weight to a room.

Antique bronze should be dusted regularly with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid using liquid cleaners, polishes, or abrasive materials, which can strip the historic patina and damage the metal surface.
