Still life painting emerged as a significant independent genre in Western art during the late 16th century, particularly in the Low Countries, focusing on inanimate objects such as food, game, and household items.

Traditional works typically feature oil pigments ground with drying oils applied to primed linen or canvas stretched over wooden stretcher frames, often finished with a protective varnish layer.

Authenticity is evaluated by examining canvas age, craquelure patterns in the paint layer, stretcher frame construction, artist signatures, and pigment analysis under ultraviolet light.

Such pieces serve as focal points in traditional or transitional spaces, often paired with classic wooden furnishings and accented by directional picture lighting to highlight tonal depth.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor relative humidity and temperature, avoiding direct sunlight exposure, and periodically consulting professional conservators for surface cleaning.
