FAQs

A Staffordshire toby jug is a pottery pitcher modelled in the form of a popular figure, typically a stout man wearing 18th-century attire, which originated in England during the 18th century.

These pieces were typically made from earthenware or pearlware, hand-painted with underglaze colours or enamel pigments, and fired in traditional kilns.

Authentic pieces often exhibit characteristics such as crazing in the glaze, hand-painted details with minor inconsistencies, weight appropriate for earthenware, and sometimes numerical or makers marks on the base.

It can be displayed as a focal point on a bookshelf, mantelpiece, or within a cabinet of curiosities to add historical texture and character to contemporary spaces.

Keep the item out of direct sunlight to prevent pigment fading, dust gently with a soft dry cloth, and avoid using chemical cleaning agents or submerging in water.
