FAQs

British watercolour painting developed significantly during the 18th and 19th centuries, evolving from topographical recording into an expressive medium championed by artists capturing natural light, weather, and rural scenery.

Traditional watercolour paintings are created using water-soluble pigments applied to handmade rag paper or watercolour boards, often utilizing gum arabic for brilliance and transparency.

Authenticity is identified by examining paper fibres, ageing characteristics such as tonal foxing, pigment settling under magnification, hand-applied brushwork, and genuine artist signatures rather than printed reproductions.

Antique watercolours can be styled using minimalist neutral framing and acid-free mounts to create a sophisticated focal point on gallery walls or narrow vertical spaces within contemporary homes.

Preservation requires framing behind UV-protective glass, maintaining stable humidity levels, and hanging away from direct sunlight to prevent pigment fading and paper degradation.
