Staffordshire saltglaze is a type of English earthenware developed in the early 18th century, characterised by a distinctive textured surface created by throwing common salt into the kiln during the high-temperature firing process.

These pieces were typically thrown using refined white clay bodies or local ball clays, finished with a salt glaze, and often hand-painted with overglaze enamels in vibrant colours such as pink, green, and blue.

Authentic items typically display an orange-peel texture on the surface due to the salt glazing process, alongside typical potting irregularities, hand-painted polychrome enamel details, and signs of age-appropriate wear on the unglazed base.

Such pieces can be displayed on a mantelpiece, open bookshelf, or side cabinet as a focal point, pairing well with neutral backgrounds that highlight their historical craftsmanship and hand-painted colours.

Preserve these items by keeping them away from direct sunlight and extreme temperature fluctuations, cleaning them only with a soft, dry cloth, and avoiding immersion in water or the use of chemical detergents.
