- Skilfully carved head and mitre, with lovely flow to the robes.

- Crozier, or crook, loose in one hand, so that it can be removed.

- Holding a casket in the other hand.

- Large iron bracket embedded into the back recess, allowing attachment to a wall.

Seventeenth-century religious carvings typically reflect baroque or late renaissance influences, often commissioned for churches, private chapels, or domestic devotional spaces across Europe.

These figures were predominantly hand-carved from dense local hardwoods such as oak or lime, often utilising traditional joinery, chisel work, and sometimes finished with gesso or polychrome paint.

Authenticity is determined by examining tool marks left by hand chisels, the natural patination and oxidisation of the timber, shrinkage cracks, and worm activity consistent with age.

Positioning the sculpture as a focal point against a neutral wall or pairing it with minimalist architectural elements allows the craftsmanship and historical texture to stand out without visual clutter.

Maintain stable relative humidity levels, keep the object away from direct sunlight and heat sources, and dust gently with a soft, dry brush without applying modern chemical polishes.
