Description

Small oil on panel fo an Oyster initialled by the French artist Charles Betremieux (1919 - 1997) who was a creative artist. The panel is generously painted.

Betremieux was born in 1919 and was predominantly inspired by the 1930s. He studied at the Ecole Beaux-Arts in Valenciennes with Raymond Debieve where their work was quickly noticed and rewarded

The period of the 1930s is characterised by the clashing of many political ideologies, including Marxist Socialism, Capitalist Democracy, and the Totalitarianism of both Communism and Fascism. Surrealism continued to dominate in Europe, and had influence internationally. Artists such as Frida Kahlo and Diego Riviera in Mexico, worked to integrate the ideas posed by Surrealism into their radical political ideologies, developing a new kind of magic realism.

These works typically feature heavy impasto techniques, textured surfaces, and subject matter focusing on natural or domestic motifs executed with traditional canvas and pigment applications.

Authentic pieces are generally created using oil-based pigments applied to stretched linen or canvas panels, often supported by wooden stretcher frames secured with traditional joinery or hand-forged tacks.

Authentication relies on examining canvas age, craquelure patterns in the oil layer, stretcher bar oxidisation, and artist signatures or inscriptions under magnification or ultraviolet light.

Integrating small-scale historical art involves pairing it with modern minimalist framing, placing it within eclectic gallery walls, or resting it on surfaces like mantelpieces to create layered focal points.

Preservation requires maintaining stable temperature and humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight exposure, and occasionally cleaning surfaces with specialised dry restoration brushes while avoiding liquid solvents.
