A stick barometer is a meteorological instrument that measures atmospheric pressure using a column of mercury in a vertical glass tube, gaining widespread popularity in British homes during the 18th and 19th centuries.

These instruments typically feature a solid hardwood case, such as oak or mahogany, housing a protected glass tube filled with mercury, often accompanied by an engraved ivory or bone register plate and brass indicators.

Authenticity is determined by examining the age of the wood, the hand-engraved calibration scales, the presence of maker signatures, and the characteristics of the glass tube and mercury cistern.

An antique barometer adds historical interest and vertical emphasis when mounted on a hallway or study wall, pairing effectively with both traditional period spaces and curated contemporary rooms.

Preservation involves keeping the instrument away from direct sunlight and heat sources, avoiding aggressive cleaning agents on the timber or register plates, and consulting a specialist conservator if the mercury column requires maintenance.
