Description

This exquisite early 18th-century French still life depicts a bouquet of vivid blooms set in an urn-shaped glass vase. It’s reminiscent of flower pieces by the French painter, Charles-Gilles Dutillieu (1697-1738).

Rendered with the utmost delicacy, this resplendent display is the work of a masterly hand. The composition itself is cleverly balanced with the light drawing emphasis to create a three-dimensional effect. While sinuous stems in the bottom left and top right create a pleasing diagonal, yet remain quietly in the background. The vase, too, is convincingly realistic.

It’s underlying spirit is bound to the Dutch Masters of the 17th century, yet its finesse and overall decorative appeal is wholeheartedly French. Produced, probably in Paris in around 1730, it exhibits a sense of controlled elegance. It’s refined, precise, and poised - akin to the decorous activities of a Parisian ballroom. Each flower could be a sumptuous gown, flowing gracefully through a splendid contredanse.

It’s a celebration of the abundant excess of nature viewed through the lens of architectural mind.

Charles-Gilles Dutillieu trained at the Academy of Saint Luke and worked extensively for the French nobility. He was commissioned by Duchesse de Maine to decorate several rooms of her châteaux of Sceaux and Anet, and also worked with François Lemoyne (1688-1373) at the château of Versailles.

Housed in a later frame.

Floral still life painting gained prominence during the Dutch Golden Age of the 17th century and continued to evolve through the 18th and 19th centuries across European art academies. These works often carried symbolic meanings related to the transience of life, known as vanitas, while demonstrating the artists technical skill in capturing natural textures and light.

Traditional oil paintings from this era were typically executed on hand-woven linen or canvas stretched over wooden frames, prepared with a gesso or oil-based ground. Artists used ground pigments bound in drying oils such as linseed, applying layers using hog bristle and sable hair brushes to build depth, luminosity, and rich tonal gradations.

Authentication involves examining the canvas weave, stretcher bar construction, and hand-forged nails or wedges typical of older framing methods. Pigment analysis, craquelure patterns showing natural age-related shrinkage under magnification, and historical provenance records also help confirm the age and origin of the piece.

An antique oil painting provides a focal point when hung against dark or neutral walls, creating a sophisticated contrast in contemporary spaces. Pairing it with minimalist furnishings allows the traditional craftsmanship and rich colour palette of the artwork to stand out without visual clutter.

Antique paintings should be kept away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and rapid temperature fluctuations to prevent canvas degradation and cracking of the paint layer. Cleaning and restoration should only be carried out by professional conservators using specialised solvents and techniques.
