FAQs

Antique mahogany chests of drawers gained prominence during the 18th and 19th centuries, favoured for the rich grain and durability of imported tropical hardwoods. Craftsmen utilised these dense timbers to create structured storage units featuring graduated drawers and fine bracket feet.

These pieces typically feature solid mahogany or mahogany veneers applied over secondary softwoods like pine or oak. Construction hallmarks include hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer boxes, traditional wooden drawer stops, and hand-turned wooden knobs or brass hardware.

Authenticity is determined by examining construction techniques, such as irregular hand-cut dovetailing, tool marks on secondary timbers, and natural oxidisation within the drawer interiors. Original backboards, hand-forged or cast iron fixings, and shrinkage cracks also indicate period manufacture.

An antique chest of drawers provides a grounding focal point in contemporary spaces, contrasting cleanly against neutral plastered walls. It can be styled with minimal decor such as a simple ceramic vessel or a framed mirror to balance historical weight with modern simplicity.

Maintain the wood by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber splitting and fading. Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth and occasionally apply natural beeswax polish to nourish the timber surface without building up synthetic residues.
