Spelter is a zinc alloy or zinc-based white metal commonly used in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as an economical alternative to bronze, often finished with a patinated bronze-like coating to simulate genuine bronze metalwork.

Spelter figures were typically produced using commercial casting methods into moulds, followed by hand-finishing details such as chasing and the application of a patinated metallic finish to enhance the visual depth of the clothing and features.

Authenticity is generally determined by examining the weight, the nature of the patination, tool marks from hand-chasing, wear patterns consistent with age, and the presence of artist signatures or foundry stamps on the base.

Positioning the sculpture on a bookshelf, mantelpiece, or console table allows it to serve as a focal point, pairing well with classic dark wood furniture, leather accents, or minimalist surroundings to create a contrasting academic aesthetic.

Preservation requires keeping the item away from direct sunlight and high moisture environments to prevent degradation of the metallic coating, dusting gently with a soft, dry cloth without the use of chemical polishes or water.
