FAQs

Marble top chests of drawers, often referred to as commodes, gained popularity in 19th-century Europe, particularly in France and Britain. The inclusion of a marble slab provided a durable, stain-resistant surface, making them highly functional for daily use in bedrooms and hallways.

Authentic period pieces typically feature solid hardwood construction such as oak, walnut, or mahogany, often with hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawers. The top surface consists of a heavy slab of polished natural marble, frequently accompanied by cast brass or bronze handles and escutcheons.

Authentication relies on examining construction techniques, such as irregular hand-cut dovetailing, tool marks on the timber, and natural ageing signs like patination on the hardware. Additionally, period marble slabs often feature hand-beveled edges and variations characteristic of hand-quarried stone.

This piece works effectively as a focal point in a hallway, living room, or bedroom by contrasting its traditional craftsmanship with minimalist modern decor. Pair the cool stone surface with simple ceramic vases or brass objects to balance the historical weight of the wood.

Maintain the timber by applying high-quality beeswax periodically to nourish the grain, avoiding silicone-based polishes. Protect the marble surface from acidic substances like citrus or wine by using coasters, and clean it exclusively with a damp cloth and pH-neutral soap.
