Description

A smart and extremely well made antique Victorian mahogany chest of drawers. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1860-1880’s.

The quality is outstanding, this is a well designed and very useful item with lots of storage space. The lower drawer is built into the plinth base, so is extra deep. The mahogany has a gorgeous light colour tone and wonderful patina.

We have recently had this re-polished, the condition is very good for its age. There are some small marks and bumps here and there remaining beneath the polish, commensurate for age.

Depth – 19 inches , 48 cm

Victorian furniture spans the reign of Queen Victoria (18371901), encompassing various revivals and transitions from late-Georgian proportions to heavier, more robust forms featuring rich woods like mahogany.

Authentic period pieces typically utilise solid mahogany or mahogany veneers applied to secondary woods such as pine or oak, featuring hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer construction.

Authenticity is identified through hand-cut dovetails, original turned wooden knobs, secondary wood linings, hand-planed backboards, and natural ageing of the timber and polish.

Pairing dark wood period furniture with neutral walls, minimalist lighting, and contemporary artwork creates a balanced focal point that highlights the rich grain of the timber.

Keep the wood away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent splitting, clean using a soft cloth, and occasionally apply traditional beeswax to nourish the polished finish.
