Chelsea porcelain was the first important porcelain factory in England, established around 1745 in London. It became renowned for producing soft-paste porcelain influenced by Meissen and Vincennes wares, heavily patronised by the British aristocracy.

Early English porcelain was typically made using a soft-paste body composed of white clay, glass, and ground frit, fired at lower temperatures than hard-paste porcelain. Pieces were hand-thrown or moulded, then hand-painted with lead-glazed mineral pigments.

Authentic pieces often exhibit characteristic glaze imperfections, such as crazing, pinholes, and unglazed foot rims known as firing scars. Early items may feature raised anchor marks or red anchor marks, alongside the characteristic translucency of soft-paste bodies.

Antique porcelain teaware can be displayed within glass-fronted cabinets, mounted in shadow boxes, or arranged on open shelving to introduce historical texture and delicate colour accents into a modern living space.

Antique porcelain should be washed exclusively by hand in lukewarm water using a mild, non-abrasive detergent, avoiding dishwashers and sudden temperature changes. Soft cloths should be used for drying, and pieces should be stored securely away from direct sunlight.
