Chinese export silver refers to items crafted in China predominantly during the 19th and early 20th centuries, specifically tailored for Western markets by local silversmiths using traditional techniques.

These items are typically crafted from high-grade sterling silver, often featuring partial or full fire-gilding (vermeil) to create contrasting golden highlights against the polished silver surface.

Authentic pieces frequently bear artisan shop marks or pseudo-hallmarks characteristic of specific Canton or Shanghai silversmiths, alongside tests confirming high-purity silver content.

It can be displayed prominently on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or side cabinet as a focal point, contrasting effectively against contemporary minimalist furniture.

Preservation requires storing items in low-humidity environments, minimising handling to avoid skin oils, and using non-abrasive silver cleaning cloths only when absolutely necessary to protect patination.
