An aneroid barometer is a device for measuring atmospheric pressure without liquid, invented in 1843 by the French scientist Lucien Vidie, becoming widely used in domestic households during the Victorian era.

Traditional barometers feature cases carved from hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, or walnut, housing a paper or enamel dial protected by a brass bezel and glass lens.

Authenticity is typically determined by hand-carved wooden cases, aged paper or ceramic dials with hand-scripted typography, traditional brass mechanisms, and signs of natural oxidisation on the metal components.

An antique barometer can be mounted on a hallway wall or incorporated into a gallery wall arrangement alongside framed prints to add traditional character and texture to the space.

To preserve the instrument, keep it away from direct sunlight and excessive moisture, dust the wooden case gently with a dry cloth, and avoid attempting mechanical adjustments unless carried out by a specialist horologist.
