FAQs

A portrait miniature is a small, highly detailed painting, typically executed in watercolour on ivory or vellum, which gained immense popularity during the Georgian era as intimate mementos or tokens of affection.

These pieces were commonly painted in watercolour or gouache on thin slices of ivory, paper, or vellum, and were typically housed in brass, copper, or gold alloy frames with protective glass.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the fineness of the brushwork, the ageing characteristics of the substrate, the presence of hand-beaten metal frames, and period-appropriate clothing and hairstyles.

These small-scale works can be grouped in a gallery wall arrangement or placed individually on narrow architectural ledges and mantelpieces to introduce historic texture and personal narrative to a contemporary space.

To prevent fading of pigments and degradation of the substrate, miniatures must be kept away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and extreme temperature fluctuations.
