Description

Cold painted Austrian bronze figure of a Partridge. Well cast and with fine detail and colour. A very beautiful example and in excellent original condition. Unsigned but excellent quality. Austrian c 1900. Approximate overall width from beak to tail 11.5 Height approx 8.5cm

The tradition of Vienna Bronze can be traced to the middle of the 19th century. Around 50 manufacturers resided in Vienna at the turn of the century, as small Austrian bronze sculpture with its fine detail enjoyed great popularity.

In the late 19th Century a number of Austrian bronze foundries situated in Vienna and the Austrian-Bohemian border began to specialise in the technique of ‘cold painted’ processes. This naturalistic finish was created by painting the raw bronze with several layers of special and secretive enamel colours called ‘dust paints’, which resulted in fine life like studies of the various models and sculptures. This process was often applied when the cast was still warm, the natural shrinkage on cooling adding to the permanency of the colour as it annealed the paint firmly into the metal. As the colour was not ‘fired’ this process is referred to as ‘cold painted’.

Cold-painted bronze refers to bronze sculptures that are decorated with layers of dust paint or oil-based paint applied directly to the cold metal surface rather than fired in a kiln, a technique popularised by Viennese foundries in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

These pieces were typically cast using the lost-wax method from a bronze or brass alloy, then meticulously hand-painted with polychrome oil paints to create realistic feather and fur details.

Authentic pieces often exhibit characteristic age-related wear and patination to the paint layers, fine hand-chased surface detailing beneath the paint, and occasionally foundry marks or Geschutzt stamps indicating Austrian manufacture.

These detailed sculptures work well as focal points on bookshelves, desk tops, or mantelpieces, adding a touch of classic cabinetry charm and texture to curated display surfaces.

Preservation requires dusting gently with a soft, dry brush. Water, chemical solvents, and abrasive cleaners must be strictly avoided to prevent stripping the fragile, historic paint layer.
