Miniature portraits are small-scale paintings, typically executed in watercolour on ivory, vellum, or card during the 16th to 19th centuries, often kept as personal mementoes or worn as jewellery.

Artists traditionally used watercolours, gouache, or enamel applied meticulously with fine brushes onto prepared ivory slices, vellum, or copper bases, sealed behind convex glass.

Authenticity is determined by examining the microscopic stippling and cross-hatching brushwork characteristic of hand-painted works, the presence of natural materials like thin ivory sheets, and period-appropriate framing or backing.

These small artworks look striking when grouped together in a gallery wall arrangement within a study, or displayed individually on small easels placed upon mantelpieces and bookshelves.

Miniature portraits must be kept out of direct sunlight to prevent the fading of delicate watercolours and pigments, and stored in stable, moderate humidity environments to protect the fragile organic substrates.
