Description

This charming mid-19th-century English oil painting depicts a landscape with grazing cattle and a quaint wandering stream.

Here, amid this gentle bucolic setting, the silence is broken only by the lilt of birdsong and the leisurely chewing of cud. It’s nature in a restful mood, when gleaming sunlight is filtered through passing clouds - and rolling hills are ornamented with a patchwork of hedgerows.

The composition and stylisation is somewhat reminiscent of similar views by Thomas Sidney Cooper (1803-1902). Perhaps the artist was a follower.

Held within a gilt frame, which could be original.

Medium: Oil on canvas

Overall size: 22” x 16½” / 52cm x 42cm

Year of creation: c. 1830

Condition: Cleaned. Canvas relined. Craquelure throughout. The paint layer is stable. Frame with various marks and showing its age.

Our reference: BRV1948

Brave Fine Art has dated this Antique Oil Painting to the 19th Century.

Nineteenth-century British landscape painting frequently focused on pastoral scenes, rural life, and the harmonious relationship between livestock, agriculture, and the natural environment.

These pieces were typically crafted using oil paints applied to stretched canvas, housed within hand-carved, gilded wooden frames.

Authenticity is determined by examining canvas ageing, craquelure patterns in the paint layer, stretcher frame construction, and traditional framing techniques consistent with the period.

Positioning the artwork against a neutral wall allows the historic gilded frame and traditional tones to provide a sophisticated contrast to contemporary furnishings.

Conservation involves displaying the artwork away from direct sunlight, maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, and avoiding chemical cleaners on the canvas or frame.
