A banjo barometer is a type of mercurial weather glass featuring a bulbous lower section and an elongated stem, which gained widespread popularity in British homes during the 19th century as both functional meteorological instruments and decorative wall hangings.

These instruments typically feature solid hardwood cases such as walnut, mahogany, or oak, often decorated with carved mouldings, bone or ivory vernier scales, brass bezels, and hand-blown glass tubes containing mercury.

Authentic pieces generally display period-appropriate hand-cut screws, aged mercury oxidation within the glass tube, hand-engraved or painted ceramic or metal dial faces, and construction techniques consistent with nineteenth-century cabinet making.

Such pieces serve as striking focal points when hung individually on a panelled wall or integrated into a curated gallery wall alongside antique mirrors and framed artwork, adding historical depth and texture to contemporary spaces.

Barometers should be mounted securely away from direct sunlight, excessive heat sources, and heavy vibrations to protect the delicate internal mechanics and the historical timber casing from warping or damage.
