The lowboy emerged in the late seventeenth century and evolved significantly during the George II period, typically functioning as a dressing table or side table in wealthy households.

Authentic pieces were predominantly constructed from solid oak or walnut, featuring hand-cut dovetail joints in the drawer construction and pegged mortise and tenon framing.

Authentication involves examining the timber grain, hand-forged or cast brass hardware, traditional joinery techniques, and natural oxidisation appropriate for eighteenth-century furniture.

An antique lowboy serves effectively as a compact entryway console, a sophisticated dressing table, or an accent desk, creating a focal point when contrasted against minimalist contemporary walls.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight, and periodically applying microcrystalline wax to nourish and protect the wooden surface.
