Pearlware is a type of refined earthenware developed in the late 18th century by Josiah Wedgwood and other Staffordshire potters, characterised by a thin glaze containing a small amount of cobalt that pooled blue in crevices, creating a whiter appearance than creamware.

Pearlware jugs are crafted from fine white-firing clay bodies coated in a lead-based glaze with cobalt additive. Decoration typically involved hand-painted polychrome enamels, underglaze blue printing, or slipware techniques.

Authentic pieces are identified by the characteristic bluish tint of the glaze in pooling areas, crazing in the ceramic body, foot rings typical of the period, and hand-painted or impressed makers marks consistent with nineteenth-century Staffordshire manufacturing.

Antique pearlware jugs work exceptionally well as decorative focal points on open shelving, sideboards, or mantels, adding historical texture and botanical colour to both traditional and contemporary spaces.

Antique ceramics should be hand-washed gently in lukewarm water using mild detergent when necessary; avoid soaking, dishwashers, and abrasive scrubbers to protect the delicate glaze and hand-painted enamels.
