A fine quality English antique chest on stand circa 1730.

A walnut veneer chest on stand measuring 161cm tall with a 2 over 3 drawer upper arrangement and 3 drawers to the base. Each fitted with oak lined drawers with matching dovetail joints and original, complete set of hand chases brass handles, all with wire straps behind, evidence of an early example, probably George 1 to early George 11, TBV, early Georgian.

The chest on stand, or tallboy, gained prominence in England during the late 17th and early 18th centuries, evolving from earlier cabinet designs to provide elevated storage with enhanced aesthetic proportions.

These pieces were typically constructed using fine native timbers like walnut, often featuring figured grain veneers laid over oak or pine carcasses, complemented by hand-cut dovetail joints and cast brass hardware.

Authenticity is identified through construction hallmarks such as hand-beveled drawer linings, original or period-correct brass escutcheons and handles, hand-cut dovetailing, and natural timber oxidisation beneath the base.

A tall wooden chest provides strong vertical lines and rich texture, making it an effective anchor piece in a neutral modern room or a contrasting statement element in a minimalist hallway.

Maintain antique walnut by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources, dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth, and occasionally applying traditional beeswax to nourish the wood finish.
