Watercolour painting gained prominence in Britain during the 18th and 19th centuries, evolving from topographical recording into a respected fine art medium championed by artists capturing atmospheric light and weather.

Traditional watercolours typically utilise finely ground pigments suspended in a water-soluble binder, applied to heavy rag paper made from cotton or linen fibres, and often framed behind protective glass.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the paper type for watermark indicators, checking for genuine pigment absorption rather than modern dot-matrix printing, and verifying period-appropriate framing techniques and artist signatures.

An antique watercolour brings historic character to a modern space when hung at eye level on a neutral wall, allowing its subtle tones and brushwork to serve as a sophisticated focal point.

Paper artworks must be displayed away from direct sunlight to prevent fading, kept in stable humidity-controlled environments, and framed using acid-free mount boards to avoid discolouration.
