Sunderland lustre jugs are a type of English pottery produced in the North East of England, particularly around Sunderland, during the 18th and 19th centuries, famous for their metallic pink glaze and transfer-printed commemorative scenes.

These pieces were typically crafted from earthenware, featuring a white glaze base decorated with black transfer prints and finished with a characteristic metallic lustre wash created using gold or copper solutions.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit age-related crazing, hand-applied lustre highlights with distinct metallic iridescence, and weight consistent with period earthenware, alongside genuine historical transfer motifs.

This type of item can be displayed on a mantelpiece or bookshelf as a focal point, pairing well with neutral backgrounds that highlight its metallic sheen and historical narrative.

Lustreware should be hand-washed gently in lukewarm water with mild soap when necessary, avoiding abrasive sponges, harsh chemicals, and prolonged exposure to direct sunlight to protect the fragile metallic glaze.
