Claude Michel, known as Clodion, was an 18th-century French sculptor famous for his terracotta and bronze works depicting mythological subjects, bacchantes, and putti. His style was frequently revived during the 19th century in France, producing high-quality patinated bronze castings that imitated his characteristic dynamic movement and playful themes.

These sculptures were typically produced using the lost-wax method or sand-casting techniques, utilizing copper-alloy bronze. They were finished with various chemical patinas ranging from deep brown to golden tones, often mounted on integrated bronze or marble bases.

Authentic period pieces exhibit crisp detailing in the chasing, naturalistic wear consistent with age, appropriate foundry marks or signatures, and a stable, hand-applied patina rather than uniform modern paint or electroplating.

Position the sculpture as a focal point on a substantial piece of furniture such as a mantelpiece, a console table, or a library desk, ensuring adequate lighting to highlight the patinated surface and dynamic contours against a neutral background.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth. Avoid using chemical cleaners, polishes, or water, as these can strip or damage the historic patination.
