Grisaille is a painting technique executed entirely in shades of grey or neutral greyish-brown monochrome. In the Georgian and Regency periods, this method was frequently employed for small-scale portrait miniatures to create a sculptural, cameo-like effect.

These works were typically painted on vellum, ivory, card, or prepared paper using fine watercolours or gouache. They were protected by convex glass and housed in frames made of ebonised wood, papier-mache, or brass.

Authentication involves examining the backing materials, hand-cut glass, pigment aging, and frame construction techniques. Early pieces often feature hand-hammered brass bezels, aged paper fibres, and historical joinery methods characteristic of the period.

Miniatures work exceptionally well when grouped together in a gallery wall arrangement or displayed individually on narrow shelves and alcoves. Their small scale allows them to introduce historical texture and focal points without overwhelming contemporary spaces.

To prevent fading of the pigments and degradation of the paper, miniatures should be displayed away from direct sunlight and high humidity. Maintaining stable indoor temperatures protects both the delicate watercolour medium and the antique frame.
