Nineteenth-century watercolours are characterised by the use of water-soluble pigments on paper or card, often depicting landscapes, portraits, and sporting subjects with fine detail and fluid washes.

Artists during this period typically utilised handmade rag paper, natural earth and mineral pigments, and gum arabic binder, housed within timber frames featuring gilt or stained finishes.

Authenticity is assessed through examination of paper ageing, watermark analysis, pigment composition, artist signatures or monograms, and the construction methods of the accompanying period frame.

Pairing historical artwork with modern surroundings creates a layered aesthetic, often achieved by hanging the piece on neutral walls or resting it on a mantelpiece to add character and depth.

Watercolours should be displayed away from direct sunlight to prevent fading, kept in stable humidity conditions, and framed with acid-free materials to protect the delicate paper.
