FAQs

Nineteenth-century furniture encompasses a transition from the refined classical proportions of the Regency era to the heavier, more ornate designs characteristic of the Victorian period, often featuring rich hardwoods such as mahogany.

Such pieces were typically constructed using solid timber frameworks, often featuring mahogany for visible surfaces, complemented by secondary softwoods like pine for drawer linings and internal framing.

Authenticity is assessed through examination of construction methods, such as hand-cut dovetail joints on drawers, timber shrinkage patterns, original hardware, and signs of age-appropriate oxidisation.

This piece can be integrated into modern spaces by pairing it with minimalist decor, neutral walls, and contemporary lighting to create a balanced contrast between old and new.

Preservation involves maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent timber bleaching, and periodically applying microcrystalline wax to nourish the wooden finish.
