This early 20th century Victorian folk art wall art object comprises a pressed botanical plant specimen mounted on paper with a handwritten French botanical label, displayed inside a glass-fronted wooden frame. The warm brown timber displays a distressed finish, decorated with hand-painted white floral motifs across the frame alongside green foliage, accompanied by a blue-bordered paper label in the lower right corner and clear signs of age such as surface wear on the dried plant leaves. Measuring 36 cm high and 31.5 cm wide, the piece hangs flat against a vertical surface. Suitable for placement in a narrow wall space, study or sunlit conservatory, the item adds a naturalistic touch to interior schemes. It coordinates effectively with traditional or eclectic room decors, bringing historical character and botanical interest to residential spaces when hung individually or grouped within a gallery wall arrangement.

FAQs

A herbarium specimen consists of pressed and dried plants mounted on heavy paper, historically preserved for scientific classification and botanical study during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Authentic specimens were carefully dried using absorbent paper, secured to card mounts with paper strips or adhesive, and fitted under glass within timber frames to protect the delicate plant matter from physical contact.

Genuine historical herbarium sheets typically feature handwritten calligraphic labels using iron gall or India ink, displaying Latin taxonomy, location data, natural paper age toning, and accurate historical mounting techniques.

Arranging framed pressed plants in gallery wall configurations or positioning individual specimens in alcoves introduces natural texture and botanical detail to contemporary, country, or traditional room schemes.

To prevent organic fading and degradation, position the framed piece away from direct sunlight, damp environments, and extreme humidity, ensuring backing materials remain acid-free.
