A banjo barometer is a domestic weather-measuring instrument featuring a distinctive shape with a circular dial at the base and a long stem housing a thermometer. They gained widespread popularity during the 19th century as both functional meteorological devices and decorative wall hangings.

These instruments were typically constructed from solid hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, or walnut, often featuring hand-carved decorative motifs, turned wooden finials, and convex glass faces protecting paper or porcelain dials alongside brass bezels.

Authentic pieces generally display age-appropriate patina on the wood, hand-written or early printed dial typography, traditional mercury tubes or early aneroid mechanisms, and hand-cut brass components rather than modern stamped fixings.

An antique wall barometer can be mounted as a focal point in a study, hallway, or living room, serving as a sophisticated traditional contrast against neutral plastered walls or paired alongside framed botanical prints and antique mirrors.

Keep the instrument away from direct sunlight and fluctuating heat sources to prevent timber cracking or dial fading. Dust the carved wooden frame gently with a dry, soft cloth and avoid using harsh chemical polishes.
