FAQs

Victorian oil portraits typically capture subjects from the 19th century with realistic detailing, often reflecting the social standing, fashion, and formal artistic conventions of the period.

Artists during this era frequently painted with oil on canvas or prepared wood panels, housed in elaborately moulded frames made from plaster and gilded wood.

Authenticity is assessed through examining the canvas or wood panel aging, the type of ground layer used, craquelure patterns in the oil paint, and the construction methods of the frame.

Incorporating historical portraits into modern spaces creates a striking juxtaposition; they can be hung singly as a focal point or integrated into a gallery wall to add depth and character.

Paintings on wood panels require stable humidity and temperature control to prevent warping, and should be kept out of direct sunlight to protect the pigments and varnish.
