A marriage armoire is a large, ornate wooden cabinet traditionally commissioned in rural France as a wedding gift to hold the brides linens and dowry, often featuring symbolic carvings such as floral baskets or ribbons.

These pieces are typically constructed from solid regional hardwoods like oak, chestnut, or fruitwood, featuring traditional pegged mortise and tenon joints, hand-carved ornamentation, and wrought iron hardware.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetails, tool marks on the timber, natural oxidisation, iron or brass hand-forged hinges, and construction methods consistent with pre-industrial cabinet making.

An antique armoire works well as a grounding focal point in a bedroom or living space, contrasting against neutral walls to highlight its natural wood grain, and can be used for modern media storage or wardrobe needs.

Maintain antique wood by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking, dusting with a soft dry cloth, and periodically applying a microcrystalline wax to nourish the finish.
