A 19th-century oil painting refers to artworks created on canvas or panel using pigment suspended in oil drying media during the 1800s, encompassing various regional schools and movements such as romanticism and realism.

Traditional construction typically involves woven linen or cotton canvas stretched over a wooden mortise-and-tenon strainer or stretcher frame, primed with gesso, and painted with oil-based pigments, often housed in gilded composition or carved wooden frames.

Authenticity is evaluated by examining canvas ageing, stretcher mark oxidisation, artist signatures or stamps, framing construction, and inspecting the paint layer under magnification or ultraviolet light for period-appropriate craquelure and pigments.

An antique oil painting can be styled as a focal point in a contemporary setting by mounting it on a neutral wall to contrast historical depth with modern minimalism, or by pairing it with transitional furnishings.

Preservation requires maintaining stable room temperatures and moderate relative humidity, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent fading, and keeping canvases clean using professional conservation methods rather than household cleaning agents.
