Description

Victorian walnut inlaid credenza

Here we are delighted to offer you a Victorian walnut inlaid credenza that was made circa 1870.

It is a rare design as it has a concave central door. Usually, the centre cupboard has a flat door.

Having the concave shape shows that this would have been a more expensive Victorian credenza to construct. It meant that that the top and plinth had also to be concave, thus taking a lot longer to make.

It has a serpentine glazed door to each end cupboard with the lined shelves behind the doors.

To the centre of the Victorian credenza is a panel door that has the wonderfully inlaid walnut panel to the door that opens to reveal the shelved and lined interior.

The Victorian walnut inlaid credenza has gilt brass mounts and brass moulding running around the frieze.

This is the best Victorian walnut inlaid credenza of its type on the market.

It as been restored and now is ready to look fantastic in your home.

Originating in the mid-19th century, the credenza became a popular dining and drawing-room fixture, often featuring elaborate marquetry, gilt-bronze mounts, and glazed side compartments influenced by continental European revival styles.

These cabinets are typically constructed using a soft-wood or hardwood carcass veneered with figured walnut, burr walnut, or exotic woods, accented with delicate boxwood and ebony stringing, marquetry inlays, and cast brass or gilt-metal mounts.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate construction methods such as hand-cut dovetails on internal drawers, old secondary timbers like pine or oak at the back, hand-carved mounts, and natural age-related patination in the timber and polish.

Position the credenza as a focal point against a neutral wall in a living room or dining area, using the top surface to display minimalist ceramics or modern art to create a striking contrast with the ornate historic woodwork.

Maintain stable indoor humidity levels and keep the piece away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent the delicate veneer from cracking or warping. Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply occasional coats of high-quality beeswax.
