Early 16th century Continental carved wood panel depicting The Procession to Calvary.

In the procession can be seen the two other prisoners, hands bound, who were to hang either side of Christ, guards on foot and horseback and numerous onlookers. The number of figures depicted in the procession grew towards the latter part of the Middle Ages to display a wide range of emotion from anger to grief with Peter Bruegel the Elder's masterpiece displaying this to powerful affect. At the top of the panel, outside the city walls, the two other crosses are being built.

Sixteenth-century carved wood panels were frequently produced in Northern Europe, particularly in regions like Flanders and Germany, to adorn churches, altarpieces, and domestic interiors with narrative religious scenes.

These artefacts were typically hand-carved from dense regional hardwoods such as oak or walnut, utilizing relief techniques where figures and backgrounds were chiseled from a single block or assembled using mortise and tenon joints.

Authenticity is determined by examining tool marks left by hand chisels, the natural oxidisation and patina of the timber, shrinkage cracks consistent with centuries of aging, and period-appropriate stylistic rendering of figures and clothing.

Mounting the panel on a neutral, plain wall allows its intricate relief work and historical texture to become a focal point, contrasting effectively against contemporary minimalist architecture.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity levels between 40 to 60 percent, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent timber drying, and dusting gently with a soft, dry brush without applying liquid polishes.
